On Friday, the 24th of June Travelers is pleased
to announce that we will feature another of our increasingly legendary
concerts. Babukishan Das Baul, heir to one of the most important lineages
of the traditional singers known as the Bauls of Bengal, will be performing.
The mystical-spiritual songs of the Bauls have inspired generations of
Bengalis. Babukishan's grandfather was an acquaintance of Nobel Laureate,
Rabindranath Tagore, and was a primary informant on the Baul tradition
that so strongly influenced the great poet's writing.
Babukishan has himself helped to inject Baul
tradition into the modern world, performing and recording not only with
the greats of Indian classical music - Ravi Shankar, Hariprasad Chaurasia
- but with such contemporary legends as Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, and even
Alice Cooper. Add to this some involvement in Bollywood music writing,
and you get an idea of the versatility of Babukishan's artistry. Chair
seating will be limited, and assured on a first-come-first-served basis.
There will be floor seating in front (bring as cushion if you wish).
